Tell us a bit about yourself here. What is your discipline? Which classes do you teach that include writing/speaking? What do you see as the biggest challenges to successful teaching?

Hello,
I teach in the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems. I teach Nutritional Assessment and Communication Techniques, both of which have speaking assignments and a couple of smaller writing assignments.

I find the biggest challenge to successful teaching is reaching today's student, who appears to want to be entertained vs. educated. Finding unique teaching methods is also difficult when in a limited classroom environment (i.e. equipment); need to find some alternatives.

Greetings! My name is Amy and I am a clinical instructor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science. I teach two undergraduate courses one of which is a capstone course. I also teach a graduate level clinical practicum course.

This is my first semester teaching the capstone course and I need HELP! I know this course will give me the "know how" to be an effective instructor.

Hi! My name is Keith--I am an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology. This semester, I am teaching a graduate course in cognitive assessment. Throughout the course, my students will be giving several presentations on various topics related to the course.

The biggest challenge I find is creating assignments (particularly written assignments) that are engaging and at the same time serve the purpose of deepening understanding of course content.

Hello,
My name is Joanne Burnett, and I am an associate professor in French and second language acquisition. I am also the graduate director for our department's Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages program. I teach all levels of French language, literature, and culture. I also teach in the education and linguistics core of the MATL in class and online. This semester I am teaching two courses: one on French grammar in context and the second online on Marie Antoinette and the Revolution. I need to work most on updating the rubrics I use for the French speaking and writing assignments in the capstone courses I teach. The ones I have are not as thorough or useful as I would like them to be. If I can revise my rubrics and then give them to students prior to their oral presentations and writing assignments, I think I would get better quality work.

Hi, This is Jenny Shi. Currently, I teach two undergraduate courses-Principles of Finance and Financial Analysis in the College of Business on the Gulf Park campus. The first one also has an online session the first time this semester. I have also taught Global Economy and Financial Management for MBA students. I'd like the students more actively involved in class discussions, presentations, and written reports or projects. But my challenge is to have good rubrics to guide students on these written or speaking assignments.

Hi everyone-
My name is Jeremy and I am an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics. Most semesters I teach a freshman-level math course involving introduction to logic and proof techniques, and I am very interested in creating more effective writing assignments for this class. In addition, I commonly use writing and speaking assignments in upper-level undergraduate courses. For me, one of the biggest challenges to successful teaching is designing activities that are meaningful for excellent students, as well as for struggling students.
